Can You Tint Over Rear Defrosters?
Most botched auto glass tinting jobs tend to occur on the rear window. There are numerous reasons why rear windows that have defroster wires are difficult to tint, but it is not a problem for experienced installers that use high-quality films.
People often ask if it is possible to tint over rear defroster wires, and the simple answer would be yes, it is possible! The long answer is listed below.
Defroster wires get very hot, which is what helps you regain visibility in the winter months. This does not damage modern window films due to the leaps and bounds in technology. There are, however, a few obstacles that could get in the way of a successful application.
How to do it right:
- During the installation process, great care must be taken to avoid scratching the wires. If the technician performing the tint application is too heavy-handed, they could actually break or dislodge the wires, thus making them ineffective.
- While applying the tint, it is important to make sure the film does not trap any air. The raised wires on rear windows can make this quite challenging. Fortunately, thanks to modern technology, high-quality window tint is now much more malleable, so a skilled technician should have no problem getting the tint to adhere around all those wires.
- If the film has to be removed, it is important this is done carefully. If removal is done the right way, the wires should remain undisturbed.
As always, it is easier for a professional installer to oversee your rear window installation than to go the DIY route, as you could end up irreparably damaging your rear window defrosting wires.
